‘I would sit on the sets and watch him perform,’ reveals Aditi Rao Hydari about her Tughlaq Durbar co-star Vijay Sethupathi [Exclusive]

Aditi Rao Hydari is on a roll. The actress has some plum projects lined up in the South with top actors. One of them is Tughlaq Durbar with Vijay Sethupathi. In an EXCLUSIVE chat with BollywoodLife, Aditi Rao Hydari said, “Actually, Vijay Sethupathi and others have started shooting. I have not joined the team as yet. We have worked together in Mani Ratnam’s Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. I remember I would sit on the sets when even I was not required just to watch him perform. He is a phenomenal actor. I am looking forward to Tughlaq Darbar.” The first look of the movie was unveiled two days back on social media. We also spoke to Aditi Rao Hydari about the raging nepotism debate in social media. People are slamming Bollywood for playing favourites with a certain set of actors. “This is not true. Every industry has its sets of positives and negatives. Opportunities will be more for those who belong to the industry, for outsiders it is less. But at some point, all will be on the same playing field. Everyone has an opinion and right to look at it their way. I do not wish to sit and judge what is right and wrong. I do not want to be resentful or envious, there is no point. We can only work hard, stay positive and live your dream. You can work hard on what is in your hand. I do not wish to judge as everyone’s experiences are unique,” she states. She worked with a newbie Dev Mohan in Sufiyam Sujathayum. “He made his debut with the film. Normally, I do not step in as I have worked with experienced people. But in this case, I took the director’s permission and rehearsed a couple of scenes with him. I believe that an actor needs to build a connect with his director first,” she said. The lady also has Hey Sinamika with Dulquer Salmaan and Kajal Aggarwal and a movie in Telugu. Sufiyum Sujatayum movie review: Aditi Rao Hydari and Jayasurya deliver old, stale wine in a dull, dusty bottle

It’s important for any filmmaker to realise what she/he is making, the subject and artistic depth of their film, the kind of impact it’s likely to recreate and accordingly go about with the appropriate treatment and narration. Form the very first frame, Sufiyum Sujatayum comes across as too pretentious. It’s nothing more than another inter-religion love story, and a poorly conceived one at that, but writer-Director Naranipuzha Shanavas is convinced otherwise, believing that he has the next great artistic masterpiece in world cinema on his hands. The only things worse than bad film is a pretentious one, and sadly, Sufiyum Sujatayum is both. What’s it about

Mute Sujata (Aditi Rao Hydari) falls in love with Sufi priest (Dev Mohan), much to chagrin of her parents, who then waste no time in getting her married off to rich, Dubai-based NRI Rajeev (Jayasurya). Ten years down the line, the couple is informed that the Sufi priest has died, rekindling memories of Sujata’s past love and revealing the turbulent marriage she has shared with her husband, who decides to take her back to her village to confront her deeply buried past once and for all.

What’s hot

Anu Moothedath’s cinematography is extremely good, but the problem is that not a single frame matches the flimsy, mundane plot, only adding to the overall pretentiousness. Jayasurya also tries his best to rise above the sagging script, but fails to do much in the face of a toxic character.

What’s not

The Hindu-Muslim love story has been done to death in every language in Indian cinema, and any attempts at such inter-religious, inter-caste tales needs buckets of energy and freshness a la Marathi film Sairat. However, Naranipuzha Shanavas thinks that all he needs to is show off some sexy camerawork, flaunt his artistic sensibilities and dive deep into religious jargon and voila, our minds will be blown away. Sorry, sir, but pseudo artistry isn’t a bit impressive. Making bad matters worse are the performances, with Aditi Rao Hydari being a one-note pony and Dev Mohan, a no-note piece piece of wood.

Moreover, as talented as Jayasurya is his character is so toxcially written — a male chauvinist who can’t see beyond his personal strife — that you can’t empathise with him for a second. A similar role was played by Ajay Devgn 21 years ago in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, whose entire plot is similar to Sufiyum Sujatayum, bit both the character and story were treated with such sincerity rather than pseudo artistry that we could connect with it. It doesn’t help either that editor Deepu Josehp’s final cut is easily haf an hour too long or that M. Jayachandran’s fails add value to a single scene in the film.

BL Verdict

Sufiyum Sujatayum is a derelict, decrepit, soporific movie, borrowing several ideas from the past and pretending to peddle them as something deep and artistic. I’m going with 1 out of 5 stars.

Rating :1 out of 5

Is Mohanlal and Trisha starrer RAM shelved? Director Jeethu Joseph clarifies

Due to the global crisis of coronavirus, we have witnessed the filmmakers shuffling the release dates of their films across the world. While many films got pushed to 2021, there are ventures, which were supposed to go on floors but due to the pandemic situation, they took a halt and among them was Jeethu Joseph‘s RAM, which features Mohanlal and Trisha Krishnan in lead roles. Recently, the rumours of this film getting shelved surfaced online and filmmaker Jeethu has now clarified on this by releasing a statement on Facebook. His statement reads, “In the last two three days I have been getting calls and messages asking whether I have shelved my Mohanlal movie ‘RAM’ and planning another project. We had to stop the work of ‘RAM’ due to the spread of Covid Virus, but it will resume shoot once the virus threat is down in UK and Uzbekistan. Since kerala is one of the few places in the world where Corona has been controlled effectively, its likely to start the shoot early here. Considering this possibility, in the meantime I am thinking of a film which has its shoot entirely in kerala but this doesn’t mean in any way that I have abandoned the project ‘RAM’. It’s just being delayed due to the circumstances.” Also Read – Week That Was South: Rana Daggubati gets engaged to Miheeka Bajaj, Thala Ajith’s Valimai pushed to 2021

Well, this statement will definitely cheer up all Mohanlal and Trisha fans. The 96 actress recently had a fun interaction with fans on Instagram. In that session, when a fan asked her, who are the three best actors in India, her choices were, Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal and Aamir Khan. Trisha Krishnan will next be seen in Mani Ratnam’s mega-budget multi-starrer Ponniyin Selvan, which also stars Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Aditi Rao Hydari, Karthi, Jayam Ravi and others. The reports suggest that Karthi plays Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan and Ravi portrays the character of Arulmozhi Varman in this venture.
