Saina box office day 3: Parineeti Chopra’s biopic on Saina Nehwal completes a horrible 1st weekend

After a disastrous opening, Saina registered almost next-to-nothing growth over the weekend, ending its first weekend on a horror note at the box office. The Parineeti Chopra starrer brought in a paltry Rs. 0.28 lakh nett on day 3, Sunday, taking its first weekend box office collection to a dismal Rs. 0.73 lakh nett. The writing was on the wall for the Saina Nehwal biopic after its opening day itself, and post the day two numbers, the trade understood that the film is truly dead and buried, and now, it’s only a matter of the formalities being completed. Saina day-wise breakup:
Day 1 (Friday): Rs. 25 lakh nett
Day 2 (Saturday): Rs. 30 lakh nett
Day 3 (Sunday): Rs. 28 lakh nett
Total (1st Weekend): Rs. 73 lakh nett

Sure, there’s the second COVID-19 wave in progress, leading to a surge in infected cases, reinforced lockdowns across several key territories in North India and night curfews in many areas, but taking all that into consideration, Saina has still collected way less than what it should have at the box office to be deemed a reasonable grosser in cinema halls like Roohi was a couple of weeks ago. Even considering how the last week has been affected much worse by the coronavirus pandemic, Mumbai Saga has still collected more than Saina on its tenth day and let’s not even get into how Godzilla vs. Kong is holding its head above water in the North belt, leave alone how it’s making merry down South. Given how Saina has massively underperformed at the box-office even after factoring in the renewed COVID-19 restrictions, we don’t see the Amole Gupte directorial folding beyond Rs. 1.50 crore nett at the most, and probably would not have collected more than Rs. 10-12 crore nett even if it had release under normal circumstances. Saina box office day 2: Parineeti Chopra’s biopic on Saina Nehwal remains dead and buried in theatres

After getting off to a disastrous start, the writing is truly on the wall for Saina, with the movie going nowhere on day two. With Rs. 30 lakh nett in its kitty on day two, Saturday, the Parineeti Chopra starrer stands at a meagre Rs. 55 lakh nett after two days at the box office and can be safely assumed to now be dead and buried with no hope of a comeback. The Saina Nehwal biopic looked decimated on the first day itself, but the trade usually waits till the next day to draw a conclusion in any case, and Saturday’s collection has only confirmed everyone’s fears, probably that of the makers, too. Check out the day-wise box office collection of Saina below: Also Read – Godzilla vs. Kong box office day 4: The movie-monster duo roars louder with a BIG jump; South territories ROCKING

Saina day-wise breakup:
Day 1 (Friday): Rs. 25 lakh nett
Day 2 (Saturday): Rs. 30 lakh nett
Total (2 days): Rs. 55 lakh nett

Neither the second wave of COVID-19, leading to a rapid rise in the number of infected nor the reinforced lockdown in some areas, especially in territories in Maharashtra, Delhi NCR and East Punjab, and not even night curfews in more than a few areas or 50% occupancy almost everywhere in theatres can be blamed for Saina’s dismal box office numbers as there was little to no buzz the moment the teaser dropped, with the trailer doing the film no favours either, and it has reflected in the collections. To put things into perspective, Mumbai Saga, which hasn’t done that well either after factoring in coronavirus restrictions, has registered almost 200% more collections at the box office that Saina on its ninth day. Let’s not even go to what Godzilaa vs. Kong has done in comparison on its fourth day. In fact, Roohi’s collections right thorugh its second week were better than that of Saina’s total 2-day figure. Saina box office day 1: Parineeti Chopra’s biopic on Saina Nehwal takes a DISASTROUS opening; COVID-19 restrictions notwithstanding

Another Bollywood movie has released and bitten the dust at the box office on day one itself. We’re talking about Saina, which has taken a disastrous start in theatres, registering near nil footfalls in all shows across the country. There was little to no buzz for the Parineeti Chopra starrer right from the time the teaser was dropped, with the trailer doing it no favours either, and the writing is pretty much on the wall for the Saina Nehwal biopic right from day one itself, with the film bringing in a paltry Rs. 25 lakh nett at the box office,, unless the movie does a miraculous turnaround today, which is nigh impossible. The makers may try to peddle the second wave of the coronavirus as an excuse for the dismal turnout, citing reason like lockdown being in effect in certain areas in Maharashtra and the North, with 50% occupancy and night curfews being implemented in more than a few areas (though Mumbai’s night curfew begins from tomorrow, Sunday, 28th March), but the fact of the matter is after taking all these factors into consideration, Saina should’ve at least collected 400% or even 500% more than its day one box office collection. Mumbai Saga has collected 200% more than Saina on day eight, with not even half as good reviews as those that streamed in for the Amole Gupte directorial from the press shows, which puts the woes of the film completely into perspective. And just look at how Godzilla vs. Kong is performing at the box office, with the Hindi belt also contributing despite its major business coming from the South. Saina now becomes another in a prolonged list of commercial failures for leading lady Parineeti Chopra. At least she can take solace in the fact that this is a critical success for her after some time.

Saina movie meta review: Critics hail Parineeti Chopra as Saina Nehwal; call it ‘what a biopic should be’

Saina is the sole Bollywood movie releasing in theatres this well, and in case you’re in two minds whether to watch it or not, then we’re here to make your life easier. Reviews are already in a day prior to the Parineeti Chopra hitting screen worldwide and since BollywoodLife couldn’t officially review the film (a rare instance on account of us being preoccupied with this), we’ve skimmed through what our fellow critics are saying about the Amole Gupte directorial, and the consensus is that Bollywood has come up with a biopic after long that deserves to be watched on the big screen, with Parineeti Chopra finally shining in a project worthy of her talent. Critics like RJ Divya Solgama, Vishal Verma, Bhavikk Sangghvi, gave Saina 4 out of 5 stars, with the former hailing the biopic as “delightfully engaging”. Vishal described it as “smashingly performed, emotional and uplifting” while the latter wrote: “There are heroes, there are superheroes and then, there’s ‘SAINA’. A ‘smash’ hit!” On the other hand, Siddharth Kannan and Nishant Bhuse went further, giving the Saina Nehwal biopic 4.5 out of 5 stars and writing respectively: “Saina is not a film, it’s an emotion, a movement”, and “A simple film that will touch your heart and take a bow, Parineeti”. Several other renowned critics like Bahrthi Pradhan, Prashant Sisodia, Renuka Vyavahare and others gave Saina 3.5 out of 5 stars. The first called the film “The triumph of Saina Nehwal”, and Renuka highlighted its “simple ode to eternal optimism. Meanwhile, Prashant lavished praise on Amole Gupte’s direction and Parineeti Chopra’s performance writing: “Amole played his shot well and Parineeti flies high on the film’s court.” Also Read – Mumbai Saga box office collection day 1 early estimates: John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi’s gangster drama gets affected by night curfews

So, there you have it. The verdict is in and Saina definitely looks like it merits a trip to the theatre.
