Gangubai Kathiawadi: Is there a rift between Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali over Alia Bhatt — here’s what we know

We all know that Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, have delivered massive hits together in the form of Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat. However, latest reports were doing the rounds that there has been a cold war between Deepika and Sanjay over Alia Bhatt playing the lead role in her upcoming film Gangubai Kathiawadi. But sources close to Bhansali have called these reports ‘a figment of an over-fertile imagination.” Also Read – Neetu Kapoor’s photoshoot for Indian Idol 12 has the sweetest reaction from Alia Bhatt

According to the reports, Deepika was apparently miffed with Bhansali for not offering her the lead role, played by Alia, in Gangubai Kathiawadi. To compensate, it was being said that Bhansali had offered Deepika a dance number in the film. But she straightaway rejected it. Then Bhansali reportedly offered her a role in Heera Mandi or a dance number in the web show, but Deepika wasn’t interested. But it seems like the reports weren’t true after all. “Deepika and Ranveer both continue to remain close to Sanjay Bhansali. In fact all through the period when Sanjay was suffering from Covid-19 they messaged him every day asking how he was,” the source was quoted as saying by Spotboye. The source also laughed off the reports of Bhansali offering Deepika a dance number in Gangubai Kathiawadi. “Do you think it makes sense to offer a dance number to an actress if she has been rejected for the lead? No, Deepika was never offered Gangubai Kathiawadi. She was already playing a female gangster in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Sapna Didi based on a work of the same author who wrote Gangubai Kathiawadi. Of course that project got shelved. But by then Sanjay Bhansali had moved on,” the source said.

However, the source also expressed worry over these fake reports damaging Deepika and Bhansali’s real rapport. It said that the two will work together in the near future by adding, “Provided these fake stories of a rift do not take a toll on their rapport.”

The Alia Bhatt-starrer is in legal trouble, and the actress and filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali have been summoned by the court of additional chief metropolitan magistrate in Mumbai. One of the four children of Kathiawadi, Babu Rawji Shah, have filed a criminal defamation case against the actress and director. Shah says that the movie is defamatory. Alia and Bhansali are scheduled to appear in court on May 21.

The film will release on July 30, 2021.

Gangubai Kathiawadi: Residents of Kamathipura organize protests against Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Leela Bhansali film

It seems like Sanjay Leela Bhansali has become controversy’s favourite child. The filmmaker has faced serious problems, be it shooting for his upcoming films or before its release. In the past, certain sections of people had opposed to the making of his films such as Bajirao Mastani or Padmaavat. It is defamatory, shameful and has hurt the sentiments of the residents of Kamathipura. The residents have worked hard to erase the social stigma attached to the name of Kamathipura, and this movie is extremely damaging to the current and future generations of Kamathipura,” read the statement. The teaser of Gangubai Kathiawadi was launched a couple of weeks ago on Bhansali’s birthday. It overflows with Bhansali’s trademark of colours as well as bombastic dialogues such as “Gangu chaand thi aur chaand hi rahegi” and “izzat se jeeneka, kisi se darne ka nahi,” mouthed by Alia Bhatt, who is seen hurling explicit words and engaging in action, in her role of Gangubai, a brothel owner in Mumbai’s Kamathipura. Bhansali is known for his larger-than-life sets and opulent costumes, and the teaser promises just as much. The film is slated to release on July 30. The film is pitted against the romantic drama Radhe Shyam, starring Prabhas and Pooja Hegde.

Talking about Ajay’s character of gangster Karim Lala, a source told Bollywood Hungama, “He comes to the rescue of Gangubai and then, plays a big role in making her the brothel chief of Mumbai. When no one stood by Gangubai, it was Karim Lala who backed her and put her in the position of power. It’s a strong character, and the film would be incomplete without Ajay’s presence. There is a reason why he is cast for the role, as no one but him could have pulled it off.”

Meanwhile, Alia is gearing up for Rajamouli’s much-anticipated lavish period drama is set to be based on the lives of two legendary freedom fighters Alluri Seetharama Raju and Komaram Bheem. The multi-lingual movie is said to be made on the rumoured budget of Rs 450 crore.

Sushant Singh Rajput suicide: Aditya Chopra and Sanjay Leela Bhansali render contradicting statements to Mumbai police

Bollywood bigwig filmakers Aditya Chopra and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have recorded contradictory statements with Mumbai Police, as part of the ongoing investigation into the death of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Bhansali had reportedly told the police that he had approached Yash Raj Films (YRF) to allow Sushant to work in his directorial “Bajirao Mastani”, which released in 2015. Sushant, at that point of time, was contract-bound with YRF. However, Bhansali recalled being told by YRF that Sushant’s dates are unavailable because he was busy with their upcoming production, “Paani”, reports indiatoday.in. The Shekhar Kapur directorial “Paani” eventually got shelved, reportedly due to creative differences between Kapur and Aditya Chopra. YRF chairman Aditya Chopra, who recorded his statement at Versova Police Station on Saturday, on the other hand said in his statement that his production house was “not” approached by Sanjay Leela Bhansali for permission to let Sushant to work in “Bajirao Mastani”. Chopra has further said in his statement that YRF had allowed Sushant to sign the 2016 release, “MS Dhoni: The Untold Story”, which means they never stopped the late actor from working with filmmakers outside the production house. The Mumbai Police team investigating the actor’s death is yet to ascertain which information is incorrect. Bhansali, in his statement given to Mumbai Police earlier this month, had also said that he had approached Sushant for four films including “Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela” (2013), “Bajirao Mastani” (2015) and “Padmaavat” (2018). The three films turned out to be blockbusters at the box office and won several popular awards. The filmmaker had reportedly offered a fourth film to Sushant but it did not work out. we wonder if these contradicting statements are going to lead to more drama. Sushant Singh Rajput suicide: Sanjay Leela Bhansali to be interrogated by Mumbai Police

Furthering the ongoing investigation in the Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case, the Mumbai Police will soon be calling filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali in for questioning, the decision no doubt fuelled by the barrage of social media posts claiming (without any proof) that the actor was the first choice for Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela and his magnum opus, Bajirao Mastani. A summon asking Bhansali to appear before the police in next couple of days has been sent to the filmmaker as confirmed by a well-placed source. Earlier, Sushant Singh Rajput’s rumoured girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, was quizzed at Mumbai’s Bandra police station for almost ten hours (after it was revealed that they were living together) as was the actor’s Dil Bechaara costar, Sanjana Sanghi, and Shanoo Sharma, a prominent casting director with the Yash Raj Films, again fuelled by speculation on social media and Kangana Ranaut‘s video that YRF had cast the late actor aside and given his projects to someone else. Sushant though has said on a number of occasions in prior interviews that he wasn’t able to be a part of films like Befikre and Half Girlfriend due to date issues or never being offered them in the first place. Said source has also informed that Kangana and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, with who Sushant was supposed to do Paani, will also be calling for questioning by the police, which is only fair, given how they’ve been frequently tweeting and voicing their opinions on the actor’s tragic and sudden demise. The case, which medical staff has confirmed as clear suicide, is getting murkier by the minute, and all we can do in the meantime is wait for the police to release their findings from these interrogations.
