Popular writer, JK Rowling, who is known for penning the fantasy Harry Potter series has come up with a treat for kids amid lockdown. The 54-year-old writer has released the chapters of her new story, The Ickabog online for free, as kids can enjoy reading in the lockdown phase. On Twitter, she announced this through 13 threads, which read, “Over 10 years ago, I wrote a stand-alone fairy tale called The Ickabog…. About The Ickabog The idea for The Ickabog came to me while I was still writing Harry Potter. I wrote most of a first draft in fits and starts between Potter books, intending to publish it after… I always meant to publish it, but after the last Potter was released I wrote two novels for adults and, after some dithering, decided to put those out next. Until very recently, the only people who’d heard the story of The Ickabog were my two younger children.” Also Read – Harry Potter writer JK Rowling’s noble gesture for COVID-19 relief on the 22nd anniversary of Battle of Hogwarts will win your heart

She added, “Over time I came to think of The Ickabog as just for my family. The manuscript went up into the attic, where it remained until a few weeks ago. This is the very dusty box I got down from the attic. Opening the box was like opening a time capsule. Most of the story was handwritten, but bits had been typed up. When I put it into some kind of order (I’m not renowned for my filing skills) I had a patchwork first draft.”

While the first chapter of the book describes King Fred and his country Cornucopia as “acres of orchards, fields of shimmering golden wheat, and emerald-green-grass on which pure white dairy cows graze”, the second chapter introduces the story of a monster Ickabog, “which had been passed down by generations of Marshlanders, and spread by word of mouth all the way to Chouxville”.

JK Rowling will release all the chapters by 10th June and it will get published as a complete book in November this year.
