Sonam Kapoor travels to London from Mumbai amid a surge in coronavirus cases — what was the urgency?

Even as the nation, especially Mumbai, grapples with a surge in coronavirus cases, actress Sonam Kapoor decided ti was time to return to London. Bollywood news circles are buzzing with reports of how the actress was spotted at the airport along with husband Anand Ahuja, with both returning to London after having landed in Mumbai for the actress’ birthday before international travel restrictions were imposed. After landing in India, Sonam stayed with Anand’s parents in Delhi before shifting base to Mumbai to be with her family for her birthday. Opening up earlier in an interview to Film Companion about shifting to India for some time, Sonam said,“I decided to come back to India right before the travel ban was imposed just because my father (actor Anil Kapoor) is 63. He’d hate to say this but he is 63, my mother is 63 as well. We all stay with Anand’s grandmother who is also around 80 years old. There was no one actually in my husband’s house just in case something happened to be there and take care of everything. So Anand and I did the responsible thing to fly back even though we were so scared to fly.”

Applauding frontline workers for their efforts during lockdown, Sonam had previously written on Instagram: “I just want to say that it is incredible the way the authorities are handling the situation. It’s very commendable and laudable. We went to immigration; they again rechecked where we had been on our passports, which was extremely responsible. Then, Anand and I, had our gloves on and our masks on. Everybody also had their gloves and masks on.”

Well, we hope that Sonam and Anand stay safe.

Swara Bhasker supports her friend, Sonam Kapoor, in the nepotism debate; says, ‘She’s a very strong girl’ [Exclusive]

Swara Bhasker is in a very unique position in the ongoing star kids vs. outsiders debate in Bollywood news. Despite being the proverbial outsider and still going strong in the industry against all the backlash she receives for voicing her mind and standing behind causes she believes in, the actress is also close friend with Sonam Kapoor, one of the star kids being severely targeted. Hence, during a recent exclusive interview with Swara, we decided to pick her brains on the current hot debate, and she willingly addressed everything from nepotism, the audience’s role in promoting star kids against outsiders, people commenting with absolutely no knowledge about how the film industry functions, some of the accusations being agenda driven and how her close friend, Sonam, is coping through it all. Also Read – Swara Bhasker finds support from Richa Chadha and Shruti Seth after #ArrestSwaraBhaskar trends on Twitter

Calling out people commenting with little or no knowledge about the inner functioning of the industry, Swara Bhasker said, “I think Bollywood is quite an easy target for a lot of people and I think a lot of people who are making accusations, especially these days, they don’t know anything about Bollywood, they don’t know how the industry works, they’re just sitting on the outside, reading some rubbish on what people are writing, some of these people themselves are not proper industry insiders or they don’t really know or just speaking from some random experience of their own. Maybe not even random, but it’s just that a lot of this kind of stuff is about people trying to settle and fix their agendas.” Also Read – From Gulabo Sitabo to Penguin: June promises to be an engaging month with some kickass content on OTT platforms

Highlighting how the topic of nepotism should be addressed, she added, “I think the topic of nepotism is an important topic and we should discuss it. The topic of privilege and the kind of privilege insiders and outsiders have is also important, but I think, we should have some decency and some rationality and sanity in that discussion. There’s no point throwing accusations on individuals and accusing them for things for they’ve not done. People cannot help where they’ve born. So, if you really want to have a discussion on nepotism and insider-outsider ratio, then it’s important to understand the structure of the industry, to understand the star-system, how did it develop, where did it come from, what is the audience’s role in it?” Also Read – TikTok star Faizal Siddiqui’s account banned after outcry over his controversial acid-attack video

Holding the audience responsible, the actress stated, “I always tell people that if you care about outsiders, watch our films in theatres, it’s as simple as that. Look at the box-office collections of outisders’ films Irrfan sir’s (Irrfan Khan) Karwaan, Nawaz’s (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) Motichoor Ka Ladoo (Motichoor Chaknachoor), Richa Chadha’s Article 375 (Section 375) Rajkummar Rao‘s Trapped, my Anaarkali (Anaarkali of Aarah), Sushant Singh Rajput’s Sonchiriya, and look at the collections of Dhadak, Student of the Year, Heropanti…who’s watching these films? It’s the same audience who’s now criticising star children. If you hate the star children, why are you watching their films? If you love us so much and if you support us so much, watch our films in theatres, it’s as simple as that! So, I think, the audience should also consider their own role in making stars. If you want to be slinging accusations around, accuse yourself or leave it.”

Swara also minced no worlds citing the agenda-driven tactics being used when blaming star kids and certain industry bigwigs for Sushant’s depression and tragic suicide: “It seems to me, that’s a very agenda-driven sort of accusation. I don’t think we should use someone’s death to settle our personal scores, it’s just not right.”

Finally, she also spoke about how Sonam Kapoor is pulling through it all: “I think, Sonam is a very strong girl and I’m sure she’ll come out of anything she’s struggling with and she’ll be fine.”

So, do you agree with Swara Bhasker’s pretty rational views on the nepotism debate? Tweet and let us know@bollywood_life .

Hina Khan’s boyfriend Rocky Jaiswal slams Sonam Kapoor’s ‘karma’ tweet on Father’s Day, says, ‘Thumbs up for accepting your reality’

The nepotism debate is again burning on social media. The tragic demise of Sushant Singh Rajput has raised questions on how outsiders are always given second-hand treatment and camps also try to sabotage their progress. Social media is spewing hate on star kids like Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Ananya Panday and Janhvi Kapoor. The cops are investigating the professional rivalry angle considering that the late actor apparently lost out on some projects. On Father’s Day, Sonam Kapoor tweeted, “Today on Father’s Day I’d like to say one more thing, yes I’m my father’s daughter and yes I am here because of him and yes I’m privileged. That’s not an insult, my father has worked very hard to give me all of this. And it is my karma where I’m born and to whom I’m born. I’m proud. To be his daughter.” Also Read – Sonam Kapoor shares hateful messages received after Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide; says, ‘I’m privileged; that’s not an insult’

The statement drew more ire from social media. The actress was flooded with hate comments. Some even termed her ideas as casteist. They found her line of thinking very narrow. Hina Khan’s boyfriend Rocky Jaiswal tweeted in reply, “So, every individual who’s been denied the opportunity they deserved bcoz of #Privileges n #Nepotism deserved it for their ‘Karma’ in their past life? By that logic, I can’t begin to imagine your next life @sonamakapoor! Respectfully M’am, I expected better frm U given ur fathers BG.” As we know, Anil Kapoor was born in a middle class family and had to work his way up in Bollywood. Justifying cruelty in the name of ‘Karma’ by d high, mighty and powerful.Thumbs up for accepting your reality and respect your opinion otherwise!” The debate is boiling on social media. People have called for the mass boycott of films made from big production houses on B-Town that regularly launch star kids.
